Backwoods Bastard

I live in the middle of no-where. Muncie Indiana actually. Believe it or not, being a huge craft beer cheerleader, I could eliminate all the breweries we can get sitting in the "Crossroads of America" down to three and still be satisfied. The mythical breweries I am talking about are Bell's, Three Floyds and Founders. I bellied up to the bar today and noticed on the chalkboard was "Founders Backwoods Bastard". I ordered one and was not disappointed. I loved this last year and this year's is love too. I am not a big Scotch ale fan, sorry "Dirty Bastard" and "Robert the Bruce" but Backwoods is killer. It chimes in at 10.5 percent and you taste 0 percent. It is 50 ibu on the hops but all you taste is a perfect balance cutting the sweetness. Many Founders beer in bottle have this huge washing machine head but this one pours nicely like the Breakfast Stout and the Kentucky. I am not a big bourbon-aged fan either. I have always hated whiskey for the most part. Don't get me wrong, there are some fine bourbon-aged stuff out there and Backwoods is one of them. I do not know the rarity of this offering this year but it was very limited last year. The label has changed this year for some reason. If you find it, buy it. It would make a great present for anybody that appreciates good beer or good trading material for yourself.

Glad to read this review, I picked up a couple bottles at The Hop Shop here in Indy a few weeks ago. Very much looking forward to trying it.

Never heard of the beer but that is one of the awesomest beer names I've ever heard of.

Sounds great, I'll see if I can pick some up in Massachusetts over Christmas. We drink a ton of Bell's in Northern VA, and there's even the rare FFF sighting in DC, but no Founders.

Founders are geniuses! And I'm not just saying that cuz of Michigan pride.
